Positive Messages

In our trailer we don't want to give off any bad messages which may influence our target audience to do negative things. There are a few examples of this happening in the past:

-The 1988 film 'Childs Play' which influenced two children to copy events in the film which caused harm to a 3 year old boy.

- Violent events in New York City subway in 1995 when a token booth was blown to pieces soon after the release of Money Train which included a similar scene.

There has been a quote from Alan Pakula which states "Movie violence is like salt. The more you eat, the more you need to eat to taste it all". We do not want to endorse any negative behaviour in our trailer, so we will avoid showing any of the following:

- Smoking

- Misuse of drugs

- Violence

- Alcohol Abuse

- Derogatory terms

Femininity

From the beginning of our time planning our trailer together, me and Tayler knew that we wanted our film to have a feminist twist to it, because both of us our females, and it is fairly unique to have two female directors on one film. When I googled female action/adventure directors, it came up with a full list on the online dictionary, Wikipedia, of action directors, and out of this list only one or two out of 63 directors were female. To continue this theme we decided that we would make the main superhero character a female, to contrast with the most popular superhero films with Batman, Superman, Spiderman and Wolverine. On comic vines Top 100 Ultimate List of Superheroes chart 75 of the superheroes were male and only 25 were female. A super heroine didn't appear in the list at all until number 16, which was Veronica Lodge, closely followed by Betty Cooper, Invisible Woman, Storm and Wonder Woman.

Questionnaire.

For our audience research we have decided to send an email around the whole of Ryde Academy which asks questions specific about our film trailer ideas. From this questionnaire we have decided that we will gain knowledge of what our specific target audience is, and what key features of a film trailer we should transfer along to our production. In addition, we will be asking what the preferred superpowers are for both the villain and the hero so that we can decided which would work best for the specific target audience. Finally we will be using this questionnaire to help decide how long our trailer should be.

This is the link for our questionnaire, which can no longer be answered. We had a bit of a problem with our questionnaire, in that the site that we are using (Survey Monkey) uses different payment plans, such as Basic, Select, Gold and Platinum. The higher that you go the more you have to pay, which ranges up to £779 a year. Obviously, Tayler and I couldn't afford this, nor would it be a good investment, so we had to go for the free plan, which is Basic. One of the main limits on the Basic Account is that you can only ask 10 questions, and you can only evaluate up to 100 responses. We received a total of 113 responses, before I closed it up because there was no point asking people to answer a survey that we couldn't evaluate. So, the last 13 responses are unattainable unless we pay £24.

Media Magazine Conference

As part of a way to enhance our Media A2 Coursework and research to gain access to higher levels we attended a Conference at London University which was here and organized by Media Magazine. We were one of the smallest groups as there were just nine of us, and there were about 300 Media AS and A2 students there in total. The conference was running from approximately 10 until 3 which included a lunch break, in which there was the chance to talk to students from different universities who studied Media courses. There were also different stands from the two leading Media Universities handing out prospectus’ and giving advice on courses.

Itinerary:

First off we had a talk from David Buckingham which included this presentation about the riots.

This presentation gave us lots of statistics on how youths are presented in the media, especially in light of the London Riots.

We also had speeches from Julian McDougall [insert link to video], Steph Hendry and Christine Bell who all talked about different elements of Media A Level...

A few of our group, about 70 students in total stayed behind for fifteen minutes during the lunch break to speak to current Media University students at Hertfordshire, Leeds, and Goldsmith Universities. They gave helpful pointers on what choice you should choose and how you can better your chances on getting accepted. They also did a short Q & A session in which they answered questions posed by the A Level students. One of these questions was how they intend to get into their desired career path after they have left University. This session was very useful in helping me to decide about my future career.

After lunch we had a very interesting and useful speech by Pete Fraser. This is the presentation that he used to motivate us:

To help us more he showed us different examples of some coursework which has been submitted as A2 final products and asked us all how we could improve it all. The footage that we watch first of all was of a short film opening, and it had many problems with it, which we all picked up on and included:

- You could hear the wind over the speech

- Unrehearsed

- The 'costume' didn't looked planned

- Shaky cameras

- Bad Quality

Tayler and I decided that we would make sure that none of these problems applied to our own production. We have since decided that we will make costumes for our actors to make them over exaggerated and make them stand out. We decided that we would not contain much diegetic speech in our movie trailer, but instead we would make a narrative at the radio station where I am a volunteer. However, we would definitely check that the actors involved know what they are doing, and run through any actions that they need to do to make sure that they are comfortable and aware of what they are doing. Also, for all of our shots my camera, which records in HD format, will be on a tripod for the duration of the shot.

Pete then continued to tell of his 9 key words and to explain them fully to help us to create a high graded media production, whatever brief we had chosen.

Next up to speak to us was Garth Jennings, who has produced and directed many moving images such as The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. He told us about his journey from being a young boy, to a Hollywood director by showing us several of his films that he had made himself when he was our age.

Lastly, we had some speeches from Babita Sharma and Paul Lewis. Paul Lewis is a journalist for the Guardian, and he talked to us about some difficulties and highlights of his career in the Media. Babita is a newsreader for BBC News, and she also talked us through the positives and negatives of working in the Media. They both told us how they got the where they are now in the Media, and what we could do to make ourselves look better for Universities and employers in the future. At the end of the conference, after everyone else had left, a few of us were also lucky enough to meet Babita, and have a picture taken with her.

Overall, the conference was very useful, and I am very grateful that I was able to attend. The speeches made me realise how it wasn't that difficult to get high marks in our Media coursework, we just had to have high standards. This helped both me and Tayler to realise that we had to expect the best from ourselves; otherwise our teaser trailer might be of a lower quality than we want. It also made us think about all the different aspects of filming our trailer, and how we could get to the high end of all of them. In addition, the speeches from the people who are working in the Media helped me to see that I need to put myself forward for every opportunity that is offered to me at this stage of my life, as everything will help make me more employable in the future.

Introduction to A2.

I have decided on constructing a Teaser Trailer according to Brief 2. This also includes a poster and a magazine cover advertising the film. I have chosen to work alongside my classmate Tayler Skinner because we both get on very well and both our AS coursework was of a high standard - which means that we can both put our imaginative ideas together to create a well-rounded and professional piece of work.

Where both of us are female we thought that this could mean our production has an interesting and original slant to it. Where most directors are male, we thought that we could create something which sees the topic from a female point of view, of which there is a gap in the market for.

My Blog

My blog has many specialised features which help to make it more interactive and interesting for my viewers. Down the bottom of the page I have a search bar which allows anyone who is looking at my blog to search for a particular word or post. I have a widget on the left side which allows me to see how many people have looked over my blog since it has been created. I have chosen a background for my blog which links in to my chosen project.

How to use:

I have included several PowerPoint’s in the form of slideshare's in my blog. If you wish to make this PowerPoint bigger then you can click the four arrows which are in the bottom right corner of the presentation. This will enlarge it to full screen, which you can exit by pressing the 'esc' key. I have also included several embedded mp3s throughout my blog. You can play this by pressing the 'play' button which is on the left hand side of the player. I have also hyperlinked words to separate pages which will probably open in a new tab on your browser. A lot of these include maps of locations to give my project a more dimensional feel to it.

Background Information.

My name is Melanie Ould, and I am studying Media A2 at Ryde High School on the Isle of Wight, South England. I took it at GCSE and developed a deep interest in it and so carried it on through to A Level. Last year I created a Classical Music Magazine, as well as a school magazine for an ancillary task. I am also studying A2's in Photography and English Language. I hope to go to University in this coming September to study forms of Digital Media Practice, as when I leave I am hoping to work backstage on films and TV to and special effects. My main films of inspiration for this are Titanic and Harry Potter, as I think that the Visual Effects in these films are absolutely breath-taking, and I would love to of worked on the sets.
